Who We Are, in Plain Terms

Western Provincial Movers Calgary is a moving company with one office, one owner, and a street address you can drive to. That address is 16 Midlake Blvd SE, in Midnapore, deep south Calgary. Midnapore is hemmed in by Fish Creek Provincial Park on the north and east, Sun Valley Boulevard on the south, and Macleod Trail on the west. The community was its own hamlet before the City of Calgary annexed it on December 30, 1961, and the Fish Creek-Lacombe CTrain station sits right across Macleod Trail, reached by the pedestrian bridge from Bannister Road. That is the corner of the city we load and unload from most weeks of the year.

The park next door is not a small green strip either. Fish Creek Provincial Park was established on June 10, 1975, covers 13.48 square kilometres, and runs about 19 kilometres east to west, which makes it the second-largest urban park in Canada, behind only Rouge National Urban Park in Toronto. Working beside it means our days are spent on the roads that ring it: Macleod Trail, Canyon Meadows Drive, Anderson Road, and Southeast Stoney Trail. Those are the roads a crew has to time correctly if a move is going to finish when it was quoted to finish.

David Gordon owns the company and has 45+ years of owner experience behind him. That number is about him, not about the sign on the door. The company has been operating under the Western Provincial Movers name since February 2014. The experience came first, the business name came after, and we would rather say that clearly than dress it up into a story we cannot back.

What the number buys you is judgment on move day. Someone with forty-five years in this trade has already had the conversation about the stairwell too tight for a sectional, the freight elevator booked out at month end, and the chest freezer nobody emptied. When the owner is on site rather than only on the phone, a crew gets corrected in real time instead of after a claim gets filed.

It also means the person quoting your move is the person accountable for it. There is no branch manager to escalate to and no call centre in another province taking the booking. The crew that shows up answers to the same Midnapore office. That structure is the reason so much of our work arrives by referral and repeat business, and you can read what past customers have written before you decide anything.

The Same Crew From Your Old Door to Your New One

On a long haul this is the whole ballgame. The van-line model loads your goods into a truck, transfers them at a warehouse, consolidates them with other households, and hands the leg to a driver who has never met you. Every transfer is a chance for a box to go to the wrong address or a table leg to disappear. We do not transfer. The crew that wraps your dresser in Midnapore is the crew that carries it into your new place in Kelowna. If something is missing, there is one crew to ask.

Rubber-Backed Floor Runners on Both Ends

Floors take the damage on move day, not furniture. Carpet gets ground with grit tracked in from the driveway, and hardwood gets scuffed by boot heels and dolly wheels. We lay rubber-backed floor runners down the path the crew will walk, at the house you are leaving and at the one you are moving into. It costs a few minutes at each end and it is the cheapest way to hand back a clean home. On a condo job the lobby and the elevator get the same treatment.

Wardrobe Cartons, Mirror Cartons, Mattress Bags, and Shrink Wrap Come With the Move

These are complimentary on our jobs, not upsells. Wardrobe cartons let hanging clothes go straight from your closet rod to the box and back onto the rod at the new place, so nothing gets folded or ironed twice. Mirror cartons are built for framed art, glass tabletops, and mirrors, the three items most likely to crack in a hurried move. Mattress bags keep beds off the truck deck. Shrink wrap goes over blankets on every hard surface before it leaves the room.

Weekly Alberta to BC Runs Over the Trans-Canada and the Coquihalla

We run the BC corridor every week, which is why a Calgary to Vancouver or Calgary to Kelowna household does not sit in a warehouse waiting for a truck to fill. The Trans-Canada route crosses Rogers Pass at 1,330 metres in the Selkirk Mountains, inside Glacier National Park, and the Coquihalla, BC Highway 5 between Hope and Kamloops, is a 186 kilometre freeway that tops out at 1,244 metres at Coquihalla Pass past the Great Bear Snowshed. Those roads are hard on a load that was packed in a hurry. Winter snowfall on the Coquihalla can exceed 10 centimetres an hour, and a truck that is not tied off properly shifts on the descent. So we pack for the road we drive, not for the driveway.

How We Price a Move

We bill by the hour, on the hours the crew actually works. The hourly rate covers the crew, the truck, and the working equipment: dollies, straps, moving blankets, and the floor runners above. The complimentary cartons, mattress bags, and shrink wrap ride along with the job.

What moves the number is the size of the home, how many stairs are in play, whether there is an elevator and how long the wait is, how far the carry runs from the door to where the truck can legally park, and the date. A month-end Friday behaves differently from a mid-week morning. Because every one of those inputs is specific to your address, we quote each move up front rather than posting a number that would be wrong for most people who read it. Tell us the two addresses, the home size, and the date, and you get the crew size, the estimated hours, and the cost broken down before you agree.

Where We Work

Calgary is the core of the business and the southeast is home. Midnapore, Sundance, Shawnessy, Somerset, Bridlewood, Evergreen, Millrise, Silverado, Chaparral, Walden, Legacy, Cranston, Auburn Bay, and McKenzie Towne are the communities our local trucks see most weeks. We work the rest of the city too, and the crews take the ring road rather than fighting Macleod Trail when the clock matters.

Outside the city limits, our service area covers Airdrie to the north, Cochrane to the northwest, Okotoks to the south, and Chestermere to the east. Beyond that we run long-distance work across Alberta and into British Columbia on the weekly corridor described above.
