Moving From Calgary to Nanaimo?

We've worked in Nanaimo twice that our photos can prove. The first was at 7:26 in the morning on May 19, 2024, in Nanaimo's University District. The second was at 10:51 a.m. on August 24, 2025, in the Departure Bay area. That's the empty truck at the top of this page, decking beams up, blankets stacked at the front, ramp down on the street.

Here's what we've learned getting a truck to the Island. The road from Calgary is long but it's the easy part to plan. The boat is what sets your day. Pick the sailing first, then the moving date.

Two Ferries Into Nanaimo

Nanaimo has two BC Ferries terminals that matter for a move. Departure Bay takes the Horseshoe Bay sailing, which crosses in about 1 hour 40 minutes. Duke Point takes the Tsawwassen sailing, the Mid-Island Express, which takes about 2 hours. A third terminal downtown only runs to Gabriola Island.

Which one is better depends on the day and the sailing times. Horseshoe Bay sits at kilometre zero of Highway 1, past Burnaby and across the Ironworkers Memorial crossing into North Vancouver. Tsawwassen is 39 kilometres south of downtown Vancouver on Highways 99 and 17. Check both on BC Ferries once you have a date range, and tell us which one you'd prefer.

Nanaimo, the Harbour City

Nanaimo is known as the Harbour City. It's on the east coast of Vancouver Island and had 99,863 people in the 2021 census. Highway 19, the Nanaimo Parkway, bypasses the city to the west as an expressway, while Highway 1 and then 19A run through town as a regular arterial road. Vancouver Island University has its main campus here.

Heavy snow is occasional, but it happens. The city averages about 69 centimetres a year, and it once got 74 centimetres in a single day, on February 12, 1975. If you're moving in winter, keep an eye on the forecast for both the mountain passes and the Island.

Past Nanaimo to Comox and Port Alice

The Island gets long north of Nanaimo, and we've been up there. On September 29, 2024, our truck was at a home in Port Alice, a village of 739 people on Neroutsos Inlet, southwest of Port McNeill on Highway 30. The view in the photo above was taken that afternoon.

Comox is another one. Bob Newman moved with us from Fort McMurray to Comox and wrote a Google review about it. Comox sits in the Comox Valley with Courtenay and Cumberland, it's home to CFB Comox, and it had 14,806 people in 2021.

Bob's review lays out the timing. Two days to pack and load. Delivery two days after that. No damage. He called it the "same crew" and thanked "Dave and Wendy the owners." His trip started in Fort McMurray, not Calgary, so read it as an Island delivery story, which it is.

How Fast the Truck Gets There

Our photos give a real sense of it. In August 2025 the truck was at a job near Golden, BC, at noon on the 22nd. By 10:51 a.m. on the 24th it was standing empty in Nanaimo's Departure Bay area. We won't promise you that pace for your load, because loading time, the ferry and the weather all change it. We'll give you a timeline that fits your move when we quote.

To quote an Island move properly, we need five things. Your Calgary address and access. Your Island address and access. Your dates. Your ferry preference, if you have one. And whether a car or anything heavy, like a piano, is coming along.

The Calgary End and the Mountain Leg

From Calgary the truck takes the Trans-Canada over Kicking Horse Pass and Rogers Pass, then down the Coquihalla to Hope and along the Fraser Valley to the ferry. Our Calgary to Vancouver movers page covers that drive in detail.

From October 1 to April 30, the mountain highways need winter tires or chains, and heavy trucks carry steel chains. Many areas on southeastern Vancouver Island don't require winter tires, so check the rules for wherever you're driving your own car. Nanaimo is on Pacific time, one hour behind Calgary, and BC doesn't change its clocks anymore.

9 Calgary to Nanaimo Moving Tips Worth Knowing

1. Choose your terminal on purpose. Departure Bay takes Horseshoe Bay sailings. Duke Point takes Tsawwassen sailings. Look at both before picking a date.
2. Pick the sailing before the moving date. The boat sets the day. Everything else fits around it.
3. Ignore the downtown terminal. The Nanaimo Harbour terminal only runs to Gabriola Island.
4. Pack an overnight bag. Keep medication, chargers, papers and a change of clothes with you. The truck is unloaded after the crossing.
5. Watch winter weather on both sides. The mountain passes need winter tires from October 1 to April 30, and Nanaimo has had 74 cm of snow in a single day.
6. Tell us if you're headed past Nanaimo. Highway 19, the Nanaimo Parkway, is the expressway around the west side of town. Comox and the north Island are a longer day, so we plan for it.
7. Reset your clock. Nanaimo is one hour behind Calgary all year now.
8. Budget for PST. BC adds 7% PST to purchases. Alberta adds none.
9. Ask about storage early. Island closing dates and Calgary ones rarely match. Line up storage before moving week.
