Calgary Winter Is Not One Temperature

Most winter moving advice online was written for a city with a steady cold. Calgary is not one. Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Calgary Int'l A put the January daily average at -7.6 C, with a daily maximum of -1.5 C and a daily minimum of -13.5 C. December averages -6.3 C and February -5.9 C.

Now the part that matters. At the same station, January has recorded an extreme minimum of -44.4 C and an extreme maximum of 17.6 C. One month, one runway, a spread of nearly 62 degrees. The date you booked in November can land anywhere inside it. Snow follows the same pattern: 16.6 cm in January, 16.9 cm in February, 16.3 cm in December, 138.7 cm a year, with average first fall snowfall on October 3 and average last spring snowfall on May 8. Winter conditions here cover about seven months, not three.

Chinooks and the Freeze Thaw They Leave Behind

The chinook is why Calgary winters swing. The Canadian Encyclopedia describes chinooks as warm, dry, gusty westerly winds coming off the Rockies onto the eastern slopes, and puts numbers on it: in southwestern Alberta one in three winter days is a chinook day, the maximum daily temperature anomaly runs from +13 C in the northwest to +25 C in the southeast, and a rise of 27 C in two minutes has been observed. Great weather to stand in. A problem for a move. The chinook melts your driveway at noon, the wind drops, the temperature falls back through zero and every wet surface turns to a sheet. The City describes the same mechanism at road scale on its pothole repair page: moisture gets through the asphalt, then repeated freeze thaw cycles and traffic break it up. Your walk does that on a shorter cycle, so we never treat a path as cleared once. The crew salts both approaches, lays runners, then walks the same route again mid afternoon. Snow Route Parking Bans Decide Where the Truck Sits

This catches people out more than the cold does. If your street is a snow route, the truck cannot sit on it during a ban. Snow routes carry blue signs with a white snowflake and cover major roadways, collector roads and most bus routes. The City states bans typically begin 18 hours after a snowfall has ended, can run up to 72 hours or until lifted, and come with notice one to two days ahead. Back alley parking is allowed during a ban under five conditions: alley wider than 6.1 metres with no existing restrictions, 1.5 metres clear of a driveway or garage, not directly across from one, 1 metre off the carts, and 3 metres of clearance either side. Plenty of deep south lanes will not fit a five ton truck inside all five.

The City's Priority Snow Plan puts roads over 20,000 vehicle trips a day, Macleod Trail among them, in Priority 1 for the first 18 hours after snowfall stops, Priority 2 roads at 18 to 36 hours. What Cold Actually Does to the Things in the Truck

A moving truck box is not heated. On a -20 C morning the contents sit at outside temperature through the load, the drive and the unload. Most household goods handle it. Four do not.

Two more come up every January. Liquids freeze and split their containers, so cleaners, paint, wine and anything in glass go in the car or get emptied, and pressurized cans and fuel never ride in the truck. If a piece has to wait out a cold spell somewhere stable, climate controlled storage in Calgary is the holding pattern.

Traction, Wet Floors and Two Homes to Protect

Floors take more damage in winter than furniture does. Salt, sand and melting snow ride in on every boot and dolly wheel, and by the tenth trip a hardwood entry is a slurry. Runners go down the main traffic line at both addresses before a single box moves. Hard board over any threshold a dolly crosses. Door jambs padded, because a crew in gloves and layers has less feel for a corner than the same crew in July. Boots stay on, since anyone carrying a 300 pound armoire down stairs needs a stable sole.

The other winter reality is speed. Gates freeze, straps stiffen, tailgates ice up, and a crew in three layers works at a different pace than a crew in t shirts. We say that when we quote, so the hours make sense before the day and not during it.

Shorter Days Change the Start Time

Daylight is the constraint people forget. On December 21 in Calgary the sun rises at 8:35 a.m. and sets at 4:33 p.m., giving 7 hours and 58 minutes of light, per the published times for Calgary sunrise and sunset. Book a 10 a.m. start and you have about six and a half hours for a load, a cross town drive and an unload.

So we start winter jobs early. First truck out of the yard, load in the light, unload before the temperature falls with the sun. Past dusk we bring work lighting for the walk and the tailgate, since a frozen walkway after dark is the biggest risk left in the day. Why Winter Is the Easiest Season to Book in Calgary

Moving demand in Canada is strongly seasonal and the numbers are public. Cleanlist, which publishes national mover household counts from its ResponseCanada consumer database, recorded 55,579 mover households in June 2026 against 26,204 in February 2026, in its monthly mover activity report. February ran under half of June, and every mover in this city feels that curve.

What that buys you is choice. In February you get the date, the start time and the crew you want instead of whatever is left on the last Saturday of June. Elevators are easier to book and condo boards have open slots.

9 Things Worth Doing Before a Winter Move in Calgary

1. Check both streets for snow route signs. Blue sign, white snowflake. If either address is on one, the truck plan changes the moment a ban is called.
2. Sign up for the City's ban alerts. Email and text notices go out one to two days before a ban starts.
3. Clear and salt both walks the night before. The bylaw gives you 24 hours after snowfall ends anyway, and a bare path carries faster.
4. Watch the chinook, not the forecast high. A warm afternoon and a clear evening is what ices your driveway by the last load.
5. Pull electronics out of the truck boxes. Laptops, drives, consoles and instruments ride in the heated cab or with you.
6. Water plants two days ahead. Cold wet soil does more damage than slightly dry soil.
7. Empty anything that can freeze and split. Cleaners, paint, drinks and glass toiletries go in the car or get used up.
8. Book the earliest start slot you can get. Under eight hours of December light means the day ends whether you are done or not.
9. Confirm heat and power at the new place. An unheated house on arrival day makes the whole unload harder.
