Need a Shared Load Mover in Calgary?

Most people who ask about a shared load are moving a studio, a one-bedroom, or a few rooms out of a bigger house, and a whole truck to themselves is more truck than they need. We work out of Midnapore at 16 Midlake Blvd SE, between Fish Creek Provincial Park and Macleod Trail. From that yard we run west into BC every week, and a truck heading for the coast rarely leaves full. Consolidated moving fills that space with smaller households going the same way.

The people who use it are students leaving a rental near campus, a couple downsizing out of a Cranston house into something smaller in the Okanagan, a parent shipping a bedroom set to an adult child in Vancouver. If your dates have give in them, this was built for you. If not, we say so.

What a Shared Load Move Actually Is

On a dedicated move you rent the whole truck. It leaves when you say and drives straight to your address, and you pay for the vehicle and the crew whether your things fill it or not. A shared load works the other way around. Your household is one of several on the same trailer, and you are charged for the portion of the truck your goods take. Fuel, driver hours, and highway kilometres split across everyone aboard, which is why it costs less than a dedicated run over the same distance.

Your quote is built on weight and space, and there are published rules behind it. The Canadian Association of Movers states that a certified weigh-scale ticket must be completed for every shipment on a long-distance move, with the truck's tare weight taken before loading and the gross weight after, so the difference is your shipment. Where the constructive measure method applies instead, CAM publishes the figure as roughly 112 kilograms per cubic metre, about 7 pounds per cubic foot of properly loaded van space.

Now the trade. Because the truck has other stops, you get a delivery window rather than a delivery date. CAM calls it a transit time guide or delivery spread, a minimum and maximum number of days inside which the mover commits to delivering safely, built from shipment size, distance, the driver's legal hours, how many other shipments are aboard, and winter weather. The driver's hours are federal law. Under Canada's Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations a driver must take at least 10 hours off duty in a day and, on a cycle-one schedule, cannot drive past 70 hours of on-duty time in any 7 days. We put your window in writing before you book.

Shared Load Moving Services We Offer

Consolidated Alberta to BC Moves

The run we share space on most. West on the Trans-Canada through Rogers Pass, then south on the Coquihalla toward Vancouver, or on to Sicamous and down Highway 97A for the Okanagan. We drive these weekly, so there is usually a truck with room heading your way, and your load rides with our crew the whole distance.

Small Loads and Partial Households

A studio, a one-bedroom, a basement suite, or three rooms out of a five-bedroom house are all normal shared-load sizes. If you are shipping part of a household, tell us exactly what goes and what stays. Space is the price driver, and a guess over the phone is worth very little.

Student and Downsizing Moves

Students moving between Calgary and a BC campus, and seniors downsizing into a smaller place in the valley, are the two shared-load customers we see most. Both usually have flexible dates and less than a full truck.

Packing, Crating, and Storage Around the Window

Complimentary wardrobe cartons, mirror cartons, mattress bags, and shrink wrap come with the job, and the crew can pack the fragile rooms or the whole place. If your window and your keys do not line up, we hold your things wrapped and inventoried until you are ready.

Who a Shared Load Move Suits, and Who It Does Not

A shared load saves real money on the right move and creates real headaches on the wrong one. Read both lists.

A shared load is a good fit if

  • Your load is small. A studio, a one-bedroom, or a handful of large pieces.
  • Your dates have give in them. You can live out of a suitcase, or stay with family at the far end.
  • You are moving somewhere we already drive. Vancouver, Kelowna, Vernon, Kamloops, Edmonton, and the Prairie cities are on the weekly schedule.
  • Nothing in the load is needed on a set day. No job start, no medical equipment, no tools you bill hours with.
  • You are downsizing. Selling or donating half the house first is the biggest lever on the price.

Book a dedicated truck instead if

  • You have a hard delivery date. Under Alberta's rules on ending a tenancy, a fixed-term tenancy ends on its end date and the tenant has to be out by noon that day unless other arrangements are made. A window does not fit around a deadline like that.
  • You are moving a full house. Once a load fills most of a trailer the saving shrinks and a dedicated truck arrives sooner. At that size, look at our dedicated long-distance moving service out of Calgary instead.
  • You run a business out of the load. Tools and stock sitting in a spread cost more in downtime than the saving is worth.
  • Your destination is off our routes. If nobody else is heading there this month, a dedicated trip is the honest answer.

How We Keep Your Load Separate and Tracked

The first question everybody asks about a shared truck is the right one. If four households are aboard, how does my chair not end up in somebody else's living room in Kamloops? Tags and paperwork.

Before anything is loaded the crew builds a numbered inventory. Every carton and every piece of furniture gets a tag, with its condition at pickup written beside it. CAM's guidance on moving paperwork describes the same thing. You receive a copy of the inventory and tag numbers, plus a bill of lading carrying the estimated weight and the anticipated delivery date spread. That sheet is what a claim gets settled against later, so read it before the truck pulls away.

On the truck your household is loaded as its own block instead of mixed through the trailer, wrapped in moving blankets and shrink wrap and strapped so nothing shifts over the passes. At delivery the driver reads the tags back and you tick them off, and anything missing or damaged goes on the paperwork then. If a full trailer cannot physically reach your new address, a smaller shuttle truck may be needed for the last leg. That is normal on a long haul, not a fee invented on the day.

Alberta and BC Routes We Share Space On

A shared load only works when a truck is already going your way, so the weekly routes are the ones with space.

We also share space toward Victoria, Abbotsford, Surrey, Penticton, Banff, Canmore, Red Deer, Saskatoon, and Winnipeg.

How Shared Load Moving Is Priced in Calgary

We bill by the hour for the work the crew does, and we quote the whole job up front. On a shared load the number is built from how much of the truck your goods take, since that is the unit you are buying; the route and distance; how much give you have on dates; access at both ends, meaning stairs, long carries, and elevator bookings that add crew time; packing; and whether a shuttle is needed.

Protection is a separate decision, so make it deliberately. CAM publishes the standard the Canadian industry works from. Under released rate liability, the basic coverage included at no extra cost, a mover's liability is limited to $0.60 per pound, or $1.32 per kilogram, per article under provincial conditions of carriage regulations. On a 100 pound table damaged beyond repair that settles at $60 even if replacement costs $1,000. Increased carrier liability lifts that toward replacement value for an added charge, and CAM notes the industry minimum is usually declared at $10.00 per pound multiplied by the shipment weight. Read CAM's carrier liability page, then tell us which option you want on your bill of lading. We are bonded and insured on every move.

No two shared loads are the same size, so each gets quoted once we have the inventory, the destination, and the dates. Send the list and we come back with the price, the crew, and the delivery window before you book. Get it in writing. That is CAM's advice and it is ours.

9 Shared Load Moving Tips Worth Knowing

  1. Ask which day we are already driving your route. The saving comes from a truck that was leaving anyway, so book around that schedule.
  2. Widen your window on purpose. A wide window is easier and cheaper to fill than a tight one.
  3. Downsize before you measure. You are paying for space, so every box sold or donated comes off the quote.
  4. Get the delivery spread in writing. It belongs on the bill of lading with the estimated weight. Hold your copy before the truck leaves.
  5. Check the inventory sheet before you sign. Tag numbers and condition notes made at pickup are what a claim gets settled against.
  6. Photograph the valuable pieces unwrapped. A dated photo of the back of the TV beats a memory.
  7. Pack for the whole window, not one night. Meds, documents, chargers, and anything with a deadline ride in your own car.
  8. Book month-end early or skip it. Alberta monthly tenancies mostly turn over on the last day of the month, so trucks and elevators are hardest to get then. A mid-month pickup often opens a shorter window.
  9. Flag the far-end access up front. A steep driveway or no loading bay can mean a shuttle for the last leg. It belongs in the quote, not the final bill.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a shared load move?

Your household shares truck space with other households heading the same direction, so you pay for the portion of the truck your goods take instead of the whole vehicle. It is also called a consolidated move.

Why do I get a delivery window instead of a delivery date?

Because the truck has more than one stop. The window, which the industry calls a transit time guide or delivery spread, comes from the size of your shipment, the distance, how many households are aboard, the driver's legal hours, and the weather. We put yours in writing before you book.

How do you keep my things separate from the other households?

Every item gets a numbered inventory tag before loading, with its condition recorded at pickup, and you get a copy of that sheet. Your household is loaded as its own block, and at delivery the driver reads the tags back.

Is a shared load cheaper than a dedicated truck?

For a small load, yes. For a full house it usually is not, because once your goods fill most of a trailer you are close to paying for the whole truck anyway.

How much does a shared load move from Calgary cost?

It depends on how much of the truck your goods take, the route, your dates, and the access at both ends. Every shared load is quoted up front once we have the inventory and destination.

What routes do you run shared loads on?

Alberta to BC every week, covering Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, Kelowna, Vernon, Penticton, Kamloops, and Victoria, plus the Prairie runs east and the QEII north to Red Deer and Edmonton.

What if my new place is not ready when the truck arrives?

Tell us before the load goes out. We can hold your things wrapped and inventoried and deliver once you have keys. Arranging it at booking is cheaper than sorting it on the day.

Are my belongings covered on a shared truck?

We are bonded and insured on every move, and your protection level is a choice you make on the bill of lading. Basic released rate liability across the Canadian industry is limited to $0.60 per pound per article. Increased carrier liability lifts that toward replacement value for a charge.
