Moving Checklist Calgary
A moving checklist Calgary renters and owners can actually work from starts eight weeks out, and it runs on Alberta deadlines. Tenancy notice, ENMAX and ATCO, the 14 day registry rule, Canada Post, and the carts you are not allowed to take with you.

Why a Calgary Checklist Beats a Generic One
Most moving checklists were written for nowhere in particular. Pack a box, label a box, buy tape. What sinks a Calgary move is the paperwork with a clock on it, and almost none of it matches Ontario or BC.
Alberta gives you 14 days after a move to update your licence and registration, in person at a registry agent. Your carts belong to the City. Your water bill arrives through ENMAX. Notice to a landlord has to be in writing on a schedule the Residential Tenancies Act sets.
We have run moves out of our Midnapore base since 2014, with 45+ years of owner experience behind the crews. Three things go wrong every month. Late notice, utilities left on at the old address, and a truck with nowhere legal to park.
8 Weeks Out: Give Notice and Lock the Date
Notice comes first because it is the only item here with a legal penalty attached. Alberta's guidance on ending a tenancy says a month to month tenant gives one month, a weekly tenant gives one week, and a yearly periodic tenant gives 60 days before the last day of the tenancy year. A fixed term lease ends on the date in the agreement unless both sides agree to end it early.
Every notice has to be in writing, carrying the rental address, the termination date and your signature. Miss the window on a month to month and the tenancy ends on the last day of the next complete tenancy month, so a few days of delay can cost a full month of rent.
Book the truck this week too. Calgary demand stacks up on the last three business days of the month, when leases turn over across Shawnessy, Somerset, Bridlewood and Evergreen at once. Our Calgary moving cost breakdown shows what moves the hourly number.
6 Weeks Out: Measure, Sort, and Decide What Ships
Walk both places with a tape measure. Door widths, the tightest stair turn, elevator car depth, parkade ceiling height. Deep south Calgary is full of tight two storey stairwells in Silverado, Chaparral and Legacy, and a sectional that fits the living room does not always clear the turn at the top of the stairs.
Sort into three piles now. Ships, sells, goes. Anything undecided at week two ends up on the truck and you pay to move it. In a condo, request the move-in package from your property manager this week, because elevator bookings fill first. Our guide to Calgary condo move-in rules covers what buildings here ask for.
Book packing help now if you want it. We can pack the whole house or just the kitchen, and our Calgary packing services bring the cartons, paper and wardrobe boxes.

4 Weeks Out: Move the Accounts, Not Just the Boxes
This is the week that separates a smooth Calgary move from a bad one. Four accounts have to move, and three carry their own lead time.
ENMAX Electricity
ENMAX asks you to tell them as soon as you can. Their moving page lists what they need: your move in and move out dates, your new address, and a phone number they can reach you at. Use your online account or call 310-4010.
City of Calgary Water
Water, wastewater and drainage is a City account, but ENMAX runs the billing. The City lists ENMAX as its contracted customer care, billing and meter reading provider, so the new account starts at 310-2010. The City lists a $10.00 application fee on new accounts and asks you to call within 45 days of your move date.
Natural Gas
With ATCO Energy you do not cancel and restart. Their moving page says to let them know as soon as you can, that 5 days is enough time, and that service is not interrupted. Customer care is 1-844-687-2826.
Canada Post Mail Forwarding
Buy it before you move. Canada Post says Mail Forwarding can start as early as 5 days after purchase, or 3 days if bought at a post office, with 4 month and 12 month residential terms. Parcels are not forwarded, so tell online sellers separately.
Report the address change to the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan too, at a participating registry agent on the same visit as your licence. Add the bank, insurer, pharmacy, vet and school registration to the same sitting.
2 Weeks Out: Parking, Carts, and the Registry Plan
Sort out where the truck sits
A loaded moving truck needs real curb, and in Calgary the curb is not automatically yours. A City of Calgary street use permit covers exclusive use of a City road right of way, meaning a street, sidewalk, alley, back lane or boulevard. Lead time goes by impact. At least 5 days for lower impact, a minimum of 10 for moderate, a minimum of 15 for high. Apply through myID at epermits.calgary.ca, and we walk clients through it on our Calgary moving truck parking permit page.
Leave the carts
The City is direct about this one. "Please do not take your cart with you when you move." Blue, black and green bins are the property of The City of Calgary and are assigned to homes rather than people. Moving into a newly built home, submit a 311 request for new bins no earlier than 14 days before move-in, delivered at no charge. Put the carts back the night before, empty.
Book the registry visit
Alberta gives you 14 days from the change to update your licence and vehicle registration, and you have to apply at a registry agent in person with identification, giving both a physical and a mailing address in Alberta. South Calgary registries get busy at month end, so pick your day now.
Moving Week: Pack Down and Confirm
Confirm the crew arrival window with us and the elevator booking with your building. Pack a first night box per person and keep it in your own vehicle. Chargers, medication, a towel, toilet paper, coffee, the box cutter.
Run down the fridge and freezer, then defrost the day before so it is dry when the crew arrives. Water sitting in a fridge on a Calgary winter morning refreezes on the ramp. Photograph the back of the TV so the cables go back right.
Take a phone photo of every wall and floor as you clear each room. It is the record you want if damage is disputed. Read our page on moving insurance and valuation in Calgary before the crew arrives, not after.

Moving Day: The Walkthrough That Protects Your Deposit
Renters, this is the reason to read a Calgary list instead of a generic one. Alberta makes both a move-in and a move-out inspection report mandatory. Alberta's inspection reports tip sheet says landlords and tenants are required to inspect within one week before or after a tenant takes or gives up possession, and the landlord must give you a copy immediately after.
Skip it and the landlord loses ground too. Alberta says a landlord cannot deduct for damages or cleaning from a security deposit if the inspection report requirements have not been met. With no deductions, the landlord pays the full deposit plus interest within 10 days of the day you gave up possession.
On our side, the crew walks both properties with you, protects floors and door jambs, then loads. Keep the driveway and front walk clear, and if it is January, salt the path before we get there.
Move-In Day and the First Week
Direct traffic. Tell the crew which room each labelled box belongs to and place furniture where you want it, because moving a chesterfield twice is time you pay for. Check that heat, power and hot water are live before the crew leaves, and find the water shutoff while the floor is still visible.
In the first week, confirm the cart collection day for the new address, since it changes by community. Watch the first ENMAX statement, and check that mail is arriving under the forwarding order.
How We Bill a Calgary Move
One pricing story, told the same way every time. We bill by the hour for the actual hours worked, with the crew and the truck included in that hourly rate, and you get the breakdown up front before anyone touches a box.
What moves the number is real work. Crew size, the walk from the door to the truck, stairs against an elevator, how much packing is left when we arrive, and drive time between addresses. A prepped house with a clear path runs faster than one where the crew is still wrapping the kitchen at noon. That is why this list exists. To read another company's estimate properly, our red flags when hiring Calgary movers page covers the warning signs.
A few things we tell every customer before they start packing.
9 Calgary Moving Checklist Tips Worth Knowing
- Put the notice in writing the day you decide. Alberta wants the address, the termination date and your signature. A text is not the same thing.
- Book mid month if you can. Lease turnover clusters at month end citywide, so the last three business days are the hardest to staff.
- Stack the registry visit. Licence, registration and the AHCIP change all happen at a registry agent, so do them in one trip inside the 14 day window.
- Label by destination room, not contents. The crew reads labels at a walking pace with a dolly in their hands.
- Leave the carts, hand over the keys. Carts stay with the house. Garage remotes, mailbox keys and gate fobs go back to the landlord.
- Plan for a chinook. Calgary swings from packed snow to bare pavement inside a day. Salt the walk and keep old towels by the door.
- Bag the mattress before moving day. A bagged one goes down a stairwell clean. An unbagged one picks up whatever is on the truck floor.
- Photograph the empty rooms. Two minutes of phone photos at both addresses is the cheapest protection there is.
- Keep one box off the truck. Documents, medication, chargers, jewellery and laptops. It rides with you.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I start a moving checklist for a Calgary move?
Eight weeks out if you are renting, because the Alberta notice period is the item you cannot rush. If you own, six weeks is usually enough, though month end books out earlier.
How much notice do I have to give my landlord in Alberta?
Alberta's guidance on ending a tenancy says a month to month tenant gives one month, a weekly tenant gives one week, and a yearly periodic tenant gives 60 days before the last day of the tenancy year. A fixed term lease ends on the date in the agreement. All notices have to be in writing.
How do I move my ENMAX and natural gas accounts?
ENMAX asks for your move in and move out dates, your new address and a contact phone number, through your online account or at 310-4010. ATCO Energy says 5 days is enough time and that service is not interrupted. Their line is 1-844-687-2826.
Who do I call about water at my new Calgary address?
ENMAX, not the City directly. The City lists ENMAX as its contracted customer care, billing and meter reading provider for the water utility, so the new account starts at 310-2010. The City lists a $10.00 application fee and asks you to call within 45 days of the move date.
Can I take my blue, green and black carts to my new house?
No. The City says not to take your cart when you move, because blue, black and green bins are the property of The City and are assigned to homes rather than people. Moving into a newly built home, submit a 311 request no earlier than 14 days before move-in.
How long do I have to change my address on my Alberta driver's licence?
14 days. Alberta requires you to update your licence or vehicle registration within 14 days of a change to your personal information, in person at a registry agent with identification. You need both a physical and a mailing address in Alberta.
Do I need a parking permit for the moving truck in Calgary?
If the truck has to exclusively occupy a City road right of way, the City requires a street use permit. Lead times go by impact. At least 5 days for lower impact, a minimum of 10 for moderate, a minimum of 15 for high. Apply through myID at epermits.calgary.ca.
What do I have to do to get my damage deposit back?
Complete the inspections. Alberta makes both the move-in and move-out inspection report mandatory, within one week before or after you take or give up possession, and the landlord gives you a copy. A landlord cannot deduct for damages or cleaning if that was not done, and with no deductions the full deposit plus interest is due within 10 days.
