A front-load washer will damage itself in transit if it travels the way it sits. A range may be tied to a gas line that a mover is not allowed to touch. What a Calgary Appliance Move Actually Demands

It demands preparation the day before, not the morning of. Fridges need to be emptied and defrosted so they drain and dry, because meltwater in a truck ends up on somebody's floor. Washers need the water supply valves closed and the hoses drained. Whirlpool's own guidance is blunt about the hoses: turn off the supply valves behind the washer, remove the hoses carefully, and catch the water that is still in them with a bucket. A refrigerator's compressor holds oil, and LG's transport guidance is that a fridge should be moved upright, and that if it has been carried tilted you should "leave it upright for 24 hours before plugging in and supplying power," because the oil can flow where it does not belong and the compressor pays for it. Front-load washers are the same story from the other direction. Whirlpool states that "new shipping bolts must be reinstalled to avoid internal suspension and structural damage to your washer during transport," and that a washer should be moved upright, not on its side. Those bolts are also why a washer that arrives with them still in will not run properly until they come back out.

And in Calgary it demands knowing where a mover's job stops. A gas permit is required for "installing, altering or adding to a gas system," and a homeowner can only pull one if they are an Alberta certified journeyman gasfitter working on their own single family home. So a gas range or a gas dryer gets disconnected and reconnected by a licensed gas fitter, and we move the appliance. We are movers, not gas fitters, and pretending otherwise is how people get hurt.

1. Empty and defrost the fridge and freezer a day ahead. They need time to drain and dry. A wet fridge leaks in the truck and on both floors.
2. Shut the water off and drain the hoses. Close the supply valves behind the washer, take the hoses off carefully, and catch what is left in them with a bucket.
3. Get the shipping bolts back into a front-load washer. They lock the drum and suspension for transport, and the manufacturer recommends an authorized service technician install them.
4. Move appliances upright. Fridges and washers are built to sit level. Laying one on its side is how compressors and suspensions get damaged.
5. Wait before you plug the fridge back in. If it travelled tilted, LG's guidance is to leave it upright for 24 hours before supplying power so the compressor oil settles.
6. Book a licensed gas fitter for gas appliances. A gas permit is required to install, alter or add to a gas system in Calgary, and only a certified gasfitter homeowner can pull their own. Book the trade around the move date.
7. Take out the racks, grates, and glass shelves. Loose internal parts rattle, chip, and crack. Pack them separately and label the box for that appliance.
8. Tape the doors shut. A fridge or oven door that swings open on a staircase takes the hinge, the frame, and somebody's hand with it.
9. Measure the new spot before the truck arrives. Width, depth, and the door swing. A fridge that fits the opening but cannot open its door in the new kitchen is still a problem.
