A 1980s Community, Down to the Stairs

Sundance was established in 1982, and the City of Calgary's 2021 census profile shows how much of it went up in that decade. 62% of its homes were built between 1981 and 1990, and 28% more in the 1990s. Almost nothing has been added since.

90% of Sundance homes are single-detached houses. Row houses, semi-detached homes and small apartment buildings make up the rest, and together they're barely a tenth of the community.

A house that's forty years old has had forty years of changes. A basement gets finished. A wall moves. A staircase gets rebuilt. So here's the one thing we'll always ask a Sundance caller to do. Measure the turn at the bottom of the basement stairs. That turn decides whether the sectional comes up in one piece.

Older Residents, Longer Stays

Sundance has an older population than most of south Calgary. 16% of residents are 65 or older, compared with 13% across the city. 89% of households own their home, and 71% of residents were at the same address five years before the 2021 census.

In a settled, older community, some of the moves out are downsizing moves, people leaving the house where they raised a family for something smaller. Our position is that those moves should be done slowly. Pack the rooms you don't use first, decide on the furniture last, and don't put a deadline on the photo albums. We can store what's undecided.

The Lake Belongs to the Residents

Sundance has a 33-acre man-made lake near the middle of the community. The residents association runs it for the exclusive use of Sundance residents and their guests, and adult members can bring up to 12 guests per house per day.

On moving day, that means the truck works from your driveway or the curb in front of the house. If your home backs onto the lake, tell us whether the lake side has the easier door. A back door with a straight path can save carrying through the whole house.

Where Sundance Sits

Sundance is east of Macleod Trail. Midnapore and Fish Creek Provincial Park wrap around it on the north and east, and Stoney Trail runs along the south. Its neighbours include Midnapore, Shawnessy, Somerset, McKenzie Lake, Chaparral and Cranston.

Across Macleod Trail, Somerset-Bridlewood station, the southern end of the Red Line, counts Sundance among the communities it serves.

For us, that's a short trip. The truck leaves Midlake Boulevard and is in Sundance a few minutes later. Very little of a Sundance quote is drive time.

Schools Around Sundance

Sundance Elementary, Fish Creek Elementary and MidSun Junior High serve the area for the public board, and Centennial High School serves it too. Father James Whelihan School teaches kindergarten to grade 9 for the Catholic board.
