Calgary to Kelowna is about 604 kilometres and just over seven hours of driving, and it is one of the most popular moves out of this city. What a Calgary to Kelowna Move Actually Demands

The route is the first thing to get right, because plenty of people assume Kelowna means the Coquihalla. From Calgary it does not. The fastest run is Highway 1 west through Banff and Lake Louise, over Kicking Horse Pass on the Alberta and BC boundary at 1,627 metres, where the Trans-Canada reaches its highest point of the whole route at 1,643 metres on the Continental Divide. From there it drops through the Kicking Horse Canyon east of Golden, climbs again to Rogers Pass at 1,382 metres in Glacier National Park, and carries on through Revelstoke to Sicamous. At Sicamous the route turns south onto Highway 97A, runs down through Vernon, and joins Highway 97, the main north-south corridor of the Okanagan Valley, into Kelowna.

The Coquihalla and the Okanagan Connector, Highway 97C, are the Vancouver-side approach to Kelowna, roughly four and a half hours from the coast. We use that pairing as the detour when Rogers Pass is shut, running Highway 1 through to Kamloops, south on Highway 5, then east on 97C over Pennask Summit at 1,728 metres to Peachland. It is a longer day, and we only take it when the Trans-Canada makes us.

Rogers Pass is the reason that detour exists. Parks Canada counts 135 avalanche paths intersecting an 18 kilometre stretch of the Trans-Canada through Glacier National Park, and it runs the largest mobile avalanche control program in the world there, with Department of National Defence crews firing 105 millimetre howitzers at the slopes all winter. When control work runs, the road closes. A planned two-day closure between Revelstoke and Golden in March 2026 ended up lasting four days. Anyone quoting you a guaranteed winter arrival hour on this route has not driven it.

2. Plan a delivery window, not a delivery hour, from November to April. Rogers Pass avalanche control closes the Trans-Canada without warning, and a two-day closure ran four days in March 2026.
3. Wrap for the pass, not the driveway. A load that survives a cross-town move can still shift on a long mountain descent. Blankets and shrink wrap belong on every hard surface.
4. Measure the Kelowna doorways, stairs and elevator first. Valley condos and townhomes are not built to Calgary suburban dimensions. Measure both ends before you pack anything oversized.
5. Sort before you pack if you are downsizing. Moving furniture that will not fit the new place costs you hours twice, once loading and once getting rid of it. Decide first.
6. Keep the essentials in your own vehicle. Documents, medications, chargers, valuables and a few days of clothes ride with you in case dates move.
7. Number and label every carton by room. On a seven hour drive you may not unpack for days. A counted, labelled load means nothing goes missing.
8. Drain fuel from anything with a small engine. Mowers, trimmers and pressure washers cannot ride with fuel or oil in the tank. Empty them the day before.
