What Size Storage Unit Do I Need in Calgary?

Almost nobody gets this right by eyeballing the living room. People book a 10x10 for a house that needs half again as much. Then the truck is half full at 4pm and somebody is driving across town for a second unit.

The size you need comes down to three things: how many rooms are coming, how high the load stacks, and how much floor you keep walkable. Get those right and the footprint picks itself. The Standard Storage Unit Footprints

Self-storage sizes are close to standard across the country, so the same footprints show up whether you rent in Seton, Shawnessy or out in Airdrie. The descriptions below are quoted from two published Canadian guides, Public Storage Canada's storage unit size guide and the Make Space Storage size guide, with what we see on the truck added. Public Storage Canada puts a 5x5 unit at roughly 25 square feet and 200 cubic feet. Divide 200 by 25 and you get an 8 foot ceiling, the height most self-storage is built to. Every size below is really a volume, not an area.

How Stacking and Aisle Space Change the Answer

Every size guide online assumes a perfect load, floor to ceiling, with nothing you ever need to reach again. Real storage rarely works that way. Start with the ceiling. If a 5x5 holds 200 cubic feet on 25 square feet of floor, a 10x10 at the same 8 foot height is about 800 cubic feet and a 10x20 is about 1,600. Stacking is half the unit. A load piled four feet high in a 10x10 uses about 400 cubic feet, so you paid for a 10x10 and used a 5x10.

Now take space back out. A two foot walkway down one side of a 10x10 costs 20 square feet, a fifth of the unit, plus the 160 cubic feet above it. Run it down the middle and you lose a quarter. That is the most common reason a unit that "should have been big enough" is not.

So decide up front which load you are building. A sealed load nobody opens until delivery day packs tight, so you can size down. An access load needs the aisle and one size up. When we run storage between your move-out and move-in dates it is almost always sealed. A long-term storage hold you plan to visit is the opposite.

Climate Control and Why Calgary Freeze-Thaw Matters

Calgary is a hard city to store furniture in, and the reason is not simply that it gets cold. It is that the temperature crosses zero over and over.

What the Calgary numbers say

Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991 to 2020 Climate Normals for Calgary (Airport) put the January daily average at minus 7.6 degrees. The revealing figures are the day counts. A normal January has 16.6 days that climb above zero and 29.8 nights at or below it. Over a year, 304.1 days rise above freezing and 192.7 nights fall to freezing or lower.

So the average March day thaws in the afternoon and refreezes overnight, about twenty-two times a month. The City of Calgary blames the same mechanism for the roads, noting that potholes develop from moisture in the asphalt "followed by repeated freeze/thaw cycles and vehicle traffic". Humidity swings as hard. The same normals put April relative humidity at 72.2% at 6am and 42.7% at 3pm, a thirty point drop inside one day.

Why wood cares

The USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook, Chapter 4 puts it plainly: "Wood, like many natural materials, is hygroscopic; it takes on moisture from the surrounding environment." Wood in service faces "both long-term (seasonal) and short-term (daily) changes in relative humidity and temperature", and when its moisture content moves, the wood moves. "This shrinking and swelling can result in warping, checking, and splitting of the wood."

It does not move evenly either. Wood shrinks most across the growth rings, "about half as much" the other way, and barely at all along the grain. A tabletop, a veneered dresser front and a piano soundboard are built from parts that want to move different amounts in different directions. Hold them at 42% humidity at 3pm and 72% at dawn, month after month, and something gives.

Why electronics care

Apple says an iPhone or iPad is "designed for use where the ambient temperature is between 0° and 35° C" and tells owners to store the device between minus 20 and 45 degrees. The ECCC normals record an extreme minimum of minus 39.7 at Calgary airport on 11 January 1997, below the storage floor a manufacturer publishes for its own product. Then there is condensation: bring a frozen TV or hard drive into a warm room and moisture forms on cold boards before they warm through.

None of this means everything needs a heated room. Patio furniture, garage tools, plastic bins and sealed cartons of dishes are fine cold. Solid wood, veneer, leather, canvas, artwork, vinyl records, pianos and electronics are not. What Should Never Go Into Storage

Anything the City treats as hazardous waste. The City of Calgary's household hazardous waste program takes gasoline, diesel, kerosene, motor oil, brake and transmission fluid, antifreeze, automotive batteries, paint, propane tanks under 30 pounds, fire extinguishers under 30 pounds and aerosol cans. The drop-off is free. Take the BBQ tank and the half can of stain there before move day.

Food, of any kind. Sealed pantry goods included. Flour, rice, pet food and cans bring mice in, and once in they chew through cartons and upholstery to nest.

Anything wet. A damp mattress, a rug cleaned two days ago, a fridge that was not dried out. Seal moisture into a cold unit and you have built a mould incubator. Everything goes in dry.

Documents, cash, jewellery, medication and plants. Passports, wills, prescriptions and anything irreplaceable ride in your own car. Plants get no light and no air movement, so rehome them.

Nine Sizing Tips From 45+ Years of Calgary Moves

Rules of thumb that have saved our customers a second unit.

1. Count rooms, not boxes. One-bedroom to a 10x10, two-bedroom to a 10x15, three-bedroom to a 10x20. Start there, then adjust for your own furniture.
2. Add the garage separately. Bikes, tires, tool chests, patio sets and the snowblower are in no bedroom estimate. A full Calgary garage is a size class on its own.
3. Decide sealed or access before you book. Choosing after the truck arrives is what forces the second unit.
4. Measure your four biggest pieces. An armoire, a sectional, a treadmill and an upright piano set the geometry of the whole load.
5. Use uniform cartons. Matching boxes stack square and carry weight. Mismatched bins waste volume and collapse.
6. Heavy on the bottom, light on top. Books and dishes on the floor, lampshades and linens high. Obvious, and skipped constantly.
7. Mattresses on edge, appliances upright. Mattresses go into bags against a wall. Fridges stay vertical with the doors propped open.
8. Keep a written inventory. Every piece we store is wrapped, labelled and logged before it leaves your home, then checked off the same list on the way back.
9. Book for the season. If the load sits from November through March, settle the climate question before the footprint.
