Moving Cost Calgary
Your moving cost Calgary number comes down to hours worked, crew size and access at both ends. We bill local moves by the hour for the time the crew is on the clock, and we break the number down before you book, never after the truck is loaded.

What a Move Actually Costs in Calgary
Calgary is a city in motion, and it shows on every mover's calendar. The City of Calgary's own housing research puts the rental vacancy rate at 5.1% in 2025, up from 4.6% a year earlier, and estimates the city adds about 34,000 residents in 2026. That is a lot of leases ending and a lot of trucks booked for the same few days.
We run out of 16 Midlake Blvd SE in Midnapore, deep south Calgary just off Macleod Trail. A one-bedroom in Seton and a four-bedroom in Cranston with a packed garage are not the same job. Any mover who prices both the same without asking a question is guessing, and you pay for the guess.

Local Calgary Moves Are Billed by the Hour
Local work here is time-based, and that is how we bill. You pay for the hours the crew is on the clock. The rate covers the crew, the truck and the basic equipment, meaning dollies, straps, moving blankets and floor runners. Wardrobe cartons, mirror cartons, mattress bags and shrink wrap come with the job.
You are buying labour and a truck for a block of time, and that single fact explains most of this page. Anything that adds minutes adds dollars. We do not publish a rate here on purpose, because a rate with no crew size attached tells you nothing. Two movers at a lower rate often cost more than three at a higher one who finish hours earlier. The total is the number that matters, and the total is what we quote on a cross-town Calgary move.
The Six Things That Move Your Hourly Total
Crew Size
Two, three or four movers changes both the hourly figure and the number of hours. Bigger crews cost more per hour and finish faster, so on a four-bedroom house the larger crew is often the cheaper total.
Travel Time
The drive between your two addresses, plus the run out from our yard and back. A Midnapore to McKenzie Towne hop is a short leg. The far northwest at rush hour is not.
Stairs and Long Carries
The Canadian Association of Movers defines a stair carry as an added charge for carrying items up or down flights, and a long carry as one for excessive distance between truck and residence. On an hourly job both land as extra minutes per trip.
Elevator Waits
Most Calgary condo corporations set a booked move window on the service elevator, from Beltline towers to the apartment-style condos in the southeast lake communities. One crew gets it at a time, so waiting is billable. Book the window first, then the date.
Truck Access and Curb Space
Where the truck parks decides how long every trip takes. The City of Calgary issues a street use permit under Streets Bylaw 20M88 with a temporary no parking option, signs posted 12 hours ahead.
Packing and Materials
The biggest lever you control. Box it yourself, hand us the kitchen and the fragile items, or book full packing services. Crating for artwork or glass tops is quoted separately.
Minimums, and Why Every Calgary Mover Has One
A minimum is the smallest block of time a mover will book. It exists because a job is never only the hours in your living room. There is the drive out, the walk-through, the paperwork, the drive back, and a truck nobody else can book while it sits in your driveway. The real question is not whether a minimum exists. It is where the clock starts and stops. Ask every mover the same three things: does the clock start at my door or your yard, is travel time inside the minimum or on top, and is there a separate truck or fuel fee.
Why Month-End and Summer Cost More in Calgary
This one is not a pricing trick. It is Alberta tenancy law creating a stampede on the same four days of every month. Under the province's rules on ending a tenancy, a tenant on a monthly periodic tenancy gives one month of notice and a landlord gives three, and a late notice pushes the end date to the last day of the next complete tenancy month. Alberta.ca's own example: notice on June 2 to end on June 30 instead ends the tenancy July 31.
So Calgary leases overwhelmingly end on the last day of a month. Every tenant wants out on the 30th, every landlord wants the unit turned for the 1st, and possession dates cluster there too. Season stacks on top. CAM lists peak season rates as a standard industry term for the higher transportation charges that apply through the summer. Mid-month and mid-week, outside the May to August rush, is where flexible dates pay.
An Estimate Is Not the Same Thing as a Quote
These two words get used as if they mean the same thing, and the gap between them is where most moving-day arguments start. CAM draws the line clearly. A binding estimate guarantees the total cost based on the quantities and services shown. A non-binding estimate is the carrier's approximation only, and final charges come from the actual weight and the tariff in effect. Plenty of low Calgary numbers are the second kind.
The federal Office of Consumer Affairs is blunt about protecting yourself. Get estimates from at least three reputable movers, in writing, on letterhead, signed, listing the boxes, the size and value of items, the cost, payment terms and timing. It names four red flags: no physical address, a phone estimate never put in writing, a large deposit up front, and a mover not registered with CAM or the Better Business Bureau. We are at an address you can drive to, BBB A+ accredited, bonded and insured.
Why a Phone Quote on a Home Nobody Has Seen Gets Renegotiated
A phone quote is priced from your description, and your description is honest and still incomplete. Everybody forgets the same things. The crawl space. The storage locker. The deep freeze. The garage shelving. The upright piano that stopped registering as furniture years ago. That is what happens when a person inventories a house from memory.
CAM describes a proper survey as walking room to room with you and looking at everything that is moving, including drawers, closets, the crawl space, the garage and the shed. Different exercise, different number. The low phone quote is usually not a lie. It answers a question missing half its information, and the mover finds the rest on move day, once your furniture is on the truck. We walk the home instead, or run a video walkthrough for out-of-town moves.
What Makes Your Bill Different From Your Quote
Even on a walked-through quote, a short list of things can push the final invoice off the estimate. Here it is, so none of it surprises you.
- Items that were not on the list. The storage locker, the shed, the second fridge. New volume, new hours.
- You were not finished packing. The most common one by a wide margin.
- Access changed at one end. A blocked loading zone, a full driveway, or a truck kept from the door adds a long carry.
- The elevator was not held. A missed or shared service elevator adds hours to a tower move.
- Weather. Snow, ice and a path that has to be shovelled first slows every carry.
- Disassembly nobody flagged. Wall-mounted TVs, bunk beds, sectionals that will not clear a stairwell.
- A second trip. If the volume is bigger than the truck, the crew goes back. Drive, load and unload twice.
Here is the part that matters more than the list. We raise it the moment we see it, before the extra hours get spent. If the crew walks in and the kitchen is not packed, you hear it then and you decide. You hear it from the crew lead on the day, not from the invoice. That habit is 45+ years old, and it is why so much of our work is referrals.
Long-Distance Moves Are Priced on a Different Model
The hourly clock is a local-move tool. Once you leave the city the industry prices differently. CAM defines linehaul charges as the transportation portion of a move, sitting on top of service charges, and lists accessorial services like packing and piano stair carries as additional. A long haul is priced on the weight of your shipment and the distance it travels. That is why an interprovincial move out of Calgary is quoted as a package, and why the weight quote is the line you compare between movers. When the dates do not line up, storage between closing dates is priced separately again.
What Your Mover's Basic Liability Actually Covers
Cost is not only the invoice. It is also what you are holding if something breaks. Under released valuation, the basic no-cost coverage written into household goods contracts under provincial conditions of carriage, the Canadian Association of Movers limits a mover's liability to $0.60 per pound, or $1.32 per kilogram, per article. CAM's example is a 100 pound table destroyed in transit settling at $60, even if replacing it costs $1,000. CAM calls that inadequate and recommends replacement value protection instead, on its liability page.
Those are industry standards, not any one company's policy. Ask every Calgary mover what valuation you are actually buying and what it would pay on a real item in your home. Ask us the same before you sign.
9 Ways to Bring Down What a Calgary Move Costs
Every one of these comes off the hours, which is the only place a local move gets cheaper.
- Move mid-month and mid-week. Alberta leases end at month-end, so those days book out first.
- Be packed before the crew knocks. A crew waiting on your cupboards is your most expensive hour.
- Purge first. Every box you do not move is time you do not buy.
- Book the elevator the day you sign. One service elevator, one strict slot, booked early.
- Clear the path and the driveway. Shovel and salt in winter, and move the cars off.
- Reserve the curb on tight streets. City of Calgary permit signs go up 12 hours ahead.
- Take things apart the night before. Bag the hardware and tape it to the piece.
- Get every quote in writing, on letterhead, signed. A verbal number is a red flag, not a price.
- Ask what happens if it runs long. Vagueness on that question tells you plenty.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do movers cost in Calgary?
Local Calgary movers bill by the hour, so the answer depends on your home size, the crew we send and the access at both ends. A one-bedroom condo and a four-bedroom house are hours apart. We quote every job up front, free. Call +1 888-338-1026.
Do you charge by the hour or by the job?
Local moves inside Calgary are billed by the hour for the time the crew actually works. The rate covers the crew, the truck and the basic equipment, plus wardrobe cartons, mirror cartons, mattress bags and shrink wrap. Long-distance moves price on weight and distance.
What is travel time and do I pay for it?
Travel time is the driving portion of the job, meaning the leg between your two addresses plus the run out from our yard and back. Ask every mover how they handle it, because it is why two quotes on the same house differ.
Is the quote you give me the final price?
The quote is built from what we see and what you tell us, and it holds as long as the job matches it. If the volume, the access or the packing changes, the hours change too. You hear about it on the day, before the time is spent.
Why is it cheaper to move mid-month in Calgary?
Alberta tenancy rules push nearly every lease to end on the last day of a month, and a late notice moves that date to the last day of the next complete tenancy month, per Alberta.ca. So the whole city moves on the same four days.
Do I pay extra for stairs or a long carry?
On an hourly local move there is no separate stair fee. You pay for the extra minutes stairs and distance add to every trip. The Canadian Association of Movers names a stair carry charge and a long carry charge as industry terms. Tell us about both when you call.
What happens if the move takes longer than the estimate?
You get told while it is happening. If the crew lead sees the job running past the estimated hours, he raises it then and you decide. Common causes are unfinished packing, items nobody mentioned, or an elevator that was not held.
What does a mover cover if something gets damaged?
Every Canadian household goods move carries basic released valuation by default. The Canadian Association of Movers caps that at $0.60 per pound, or $1.32 per kilogram, per article under provincial conditions of carriage. Ask us what coverage applies before you book.
