The Calgary Moving Day Process, Start to Finish

A local move runs in the same order every time. The crew arrives inside a booked window, walks the home with you, lays down protection, tags and lists what is going, loads the truck to a plan, drives to the new address, unloads to your direction, walks both properties with you, then writes the invoice once the clock stops. Most of the stress comes from not knowing why a step takes the time it takes.

When the Clock Starts and When It Stops

Movers answer the start and stop question differently, so ask all of them the same three things. Does the clock start at my door or at your yard. Is the drive between my two addresses inside the quote or on top of it. Is there a separate truck or fuel charge. The federal Office of Consumer Affairs tells customers to have everything ready to go when the movers arrive, because you can be charged for keeping a crew waiting. On an hourly job that is not a penalty. That is the clock.

The Walkthrough That Sets Up the Whole Day

The first ten minutes decide the rest of the day. The Canadian Association of Movers describes the arrival the way we run it. The crew shows up, sets up the truck, then comes inside to tour the home and see what is moving and what has to come apart. That is when you point out what stays behind.

How the Crew Protects Floors, Doorways and Furniture

Protection goes down before anything comes out. Floor runners along the traffic path, blankets over anything with a finish, shrink wrap holding those blankets and holding drawers shut, and padding on the door frames and stair rails every load squeezes past. The Office of Consumer Affairs puts it on its moving day list. Ask the mover to use drop cloths or runners at both locations to protect floors and rugs, and watch it go down at both ends.

Winter changes this job more than in most cities. Snow and ice slow every trip, and a soaked runner turns into a hazard. Under the City of Calgary's snow clearing rules, property owners must clear the sidewalk bordering their property within 24 hours after a snowfall. On move day you want that path down to bare concrete before the truck arrives, not while three movers wait on a shovel.

Mattresses go into bags and glass tops into mirror cartons. Upholstery gets blanketed rather than shrink wrapped tight, because plastic against fabric traps moisture on a cold morning.

Load Order, and Why It Looks Slow at the Start

The first hour of loading looks slow and the last hour looks quick, and that is by design. CAM describes a truck load as a giant Tetris puzzle, with care taken so everything fits into each layer and nothing shifts on the road. Heavy and square goes low and first. Appliances and case goods build the walls. Boxes fill the tiers. Soft and odd shaped pieces fill the gaps last. A tight load comes off in order at the other end instead of being dug out.

The Inventory, and the Paperwork You Sign

On a full service move the crew tags and lists what goes on the truck. Each item gets a number and its condition gets noted, scratched, chipped, broken or new, so both sides agree on what a piece looked like before it moved. Ask for your copy on the day. The Office of Consumer Affairs notes that provincial transportation regulations require an inventory before belongings are transported on a long distance move.

The second document is the bill of lading. CAM's moving terms glossary defines it as the receipt for your goods and the contract for their transportation. In Alberta what must appear on it comes from the province's Bill of Lading and Conditions of Carriage Regulation. Read the liability line before you sign. CAM and the federal Office of Consumer Affairs both publish the same released valuation figure. What Actually Makes a Calgary Moving Day Run Long

The honest list, in rough order of how often it happens.

1. Packing is not finished. A crew boxing your kitchen is not loading your truck. Finish the night before, or hand it over ahead of time with a Calgary packing service.
2. The elevator window is short or shared. A padded service lift keyed into service mode moves fast. A shared passenger car does not. The rest sits on our Calgary condo move-in rules page.
3. The truck cannot get close. Every extra metre between tailgate and door gets walked twice per item. CAM's glossary calls that a long carry, a charge for excessive distance between truck and residence.
4. Stairs. The same glossary lists a stair carry charge for carrying items up or down flights. Two flights with a turn at the landing is where sectionals and mattresses eat the schedule.
5. Weather. CAM notes heat, rain or snow can make a load feel like it takes forever. A January load in Calgary is slower than a June one.
6. Something was never on the list. The storage locker, the shed, the second fridge, the piano nobody mentioned. New volume, new hours.
7. Nobody is directing at the new place. The crew has never been in this home. Without direction, boxes land in the wrong room and get carried twice.

The Final Walkthrough at Both Ends

Do not do this one from the driveway. Before the truck leaves the old address, walk every room with the crew lead and look behind doors, inside closets, in the crawl space and out in the garage. CAM gives the same instruction. Go through each room before you sign the paperwork.

At the new place it runs the other way. Check items off the inventory as they come through the door and photograph anything that arrived marked. The Office of Consumer Affairs adds two steps. Walk the hallways into your new place to check the building itself, and look inside the truck before it leaves. It also notes claims often have to be made within 30 days on a local move.

Paying at the End of an Hourly Move

On a time billed local move nobody knows the final figure until the crew stops working, which is why the invoice gets written at the end. Hours worked, crew size and anything added on the day are what turn a quote into a bill. A crew lead should raise a change while it is happening, not print it as a surprise at the tailgate. That habit is 45+ years old here, and it is why so much of our work arrives by referral.

On deposits the published guidance is not vague. CAM says professional moving companies do not expect the entire payment up front, and while some ask a small deposit to hold the space, they will never ask for the full amount before they take your items. The Office of Consumer Affairs lists a large deposit up front as a red flag, alongside no physical address and a phone estimate never put in writing. 9 Things to Do the Night Before Your Calgary Move

1. Tape the last box shut. Not at 8 a.m. with the crew in your entryway. Unfinished packing is the biggest reason an hourly move runs long.
2. Empty, unplug and dry the fridge and freezer. A defrosting freezer leaks across a truck floor and across your boxes.
3. Pull out what you are carrying yourself. Wallet, keys, passports, medication, jewellery, the laptop. One spot, labelled, so nothing gets loaded.
4. Clear the path. Roll up scatter rugs, clear the entry and the stairs, get cars off the driveway.
5. Shovel and salt at both ends. Your sidewalk is your responsibility within 24 hours of a snowfall under City rules, and bare concrete beats sanded ice.
6. Check the snow route map. A declared snow route parking ban restricts parking on those routes for up to 72 hours, and the City says a vehicle left on one is subject to enforcement, up to a $120 ticket and a tow.
7. Confirm the elevator and give the desk our name. Concierge desks turn away crews nobody told them about, and that wait sits on your clock.
8. Take apart what you can. Bed frames, table legs, shelf brackets. Bag the hardware and tape it to the piece.
9. Photograph anything valuable or awkward. The back of the TV before it is unplugged, and the marks already on the dresser.
