Apartment Movers Calgary
Western Provincial Movers is the apartment movers Calgary renters call when the sofa has to come down three flights, the truck has nowhere obvious to park, and the damage deposit is riding on how clean the stairwell looks after. One crew, 45+ years of owner experience, billed by the hour and quoted up front.

Need an Apartment Mover in Calgary?
Renting in Calgary means moving more often than most homeowners do, and apartment moves punish the details a house move forgives. Stairs instead of a driveway. A landing you cannot turn a box spring on. A curb lane already full of residents' cars. We are based in Midnapore in deep south Calgary at 16 Midlake Blvd SE, and we run apartment moves right across the city, from the older walk-up pockets in the inner city to the newer rental buildings going up in the south and the northeast.
There are a lot of those newer buildings right now. CMHC's 2025 rental market work found that in Calgary "the vacancy rate stood around 5% despite a record level of supply that has been coming in, a surge of 11%." More supply means more people moving between buildings, and it means a lot of first-time renters discovering on move day that the truck cannot park where they assumed it could.
If you are comparing apartment movers in Calgary, the thing to ask about is stairs, parking, and how the hours get counted.

What a Calgary Apartment Move Actually Demands
Calgary's rental stock is not one building type. The inner-city hillside communities are full of low-rise walk-ups from the mid-century push for density. Bankview is the clearest example. It sits on 0.7 square kilometres, 85.7% of its buildings are condominiums or apartments, 80% of its housing is rented, and the community was redesigned back in 1950 specifically to allow higher-density apartment buildings. The Beltline is denser again, with a population around 24,887 and roughly 8,580 people per square kilometre, and 95.8% of its buildings are apartments. Those numbers describe a very specific moving problem. Narrow stairwells, half-landings, exterior stairs, and street parking that is already spoken for.
The second demand is the paperwork at both ends of a tenancy. Alberta's Residential Tenancies Act caps a security deposit at no more than one month's rent at the time the tenancy starts, and the Act requires landlords and tenants to inspect the premises within one week before or after the tenant takes or gives up possession. Those inspection reports are what protect your deposit. A landlord who wants to deduct for damage has to have completed reports, signed properly, with a copy given to the tenant. So the scuff your movers leave on a doorframe on the way out is not a small thing, and neither is the state of the shared stairwell. We lay rubber-backed floor runners on the way out and the way in, and we pad the tight turns before the furniture reaches them.
Moving across town rather than out of province? The hourly, crew-and-truck side of it is the same job we describe on our local moving service page, and the full picture of what we handle sits on the Western Provincial Movers home page.
Apartment Moving Services We Offer
Walk-Up and Stair-Carry Moves
A third-floor walk-up is the classic Calgary apartment move and it is mostly technique. We measure the stairwell and the landings first, because a box spring or a sectional that fits the suite door does not always clear a half-landing turn. Big pieces get blanket-wrapped and shrink-wrapped before they leave the room, not on the landing. Doorframes and railings on the carry path get padded. The crew works a planned order down the stairs so heavy items are never being muscled past each other in a corridor. Winter makes it harder, so exterior stairs and the walk to the truck get cleared and salted before the first load moves.
Elevator Buildings and Booked Windows
In a rental tower the elevator is the bottleneck. Most buildings want the move booked with the resident manager, and some hold the lift on a set window with pads hung inside the cab. We confirm that window before move day and build the load order around it, so your paid hours are spent carrying instead of standing in a lobby waiting for a lift that is running normal service. Floor runners go down in the lobby and the corridor as well as inside your suite, because those shared surfaces are exactly where a building manager looks for damage.
Truck Parking and City Permits
Parking is the part renters forget. Large parts of inner-city Calgary sit inside Residential Parking Zones where you can get a ticket for parking without a valid permit, and where visitor permits only cover a vehicle within 150 metres of the resident's address. For a work vehicle, the City issues a special parking permit for contractors and other organizations working temporarily in those zones at $32.50 plus GST per week, with a minimum of three business days to process, and it is explicitly not for use in a paid ParkPlus zone. If the job needs a curb lane held clear, that is a Temporary No Parking permit, and the signage has to be installed "at least 12 hours in advance of the restriction period" to be enforceable. We tell you which one applies when we quote so nobody is circling the block with a loaded truck.
Small Apartment Moves and Packing
A one-bedroom is a real move, not a favour. We bring complimentary wardrobe cartons so hanging clothes go straight from the closet rod to the box and back onto a rod, mirror cartons for framed art and glass, mattress bags so a bed rides clean up a shared stairwell, and shrink wrap to hold drawers and cushions shut. If you would rather not box the kitchen yourself, our packing service can take the whole suite or just the fragile pieces. Studios and one-bedrooms often move in a single trip, which keeps the hours down.
Why Calgary Renters Choose Us
Stairs and Carries Get Quoted, Not Sprung on You
Flights of stairs and a long carry from the door to the truck both add crew time, and we say so before you book instead of after. You get the honest version at quote time, which is the only version that helps you plan a move-out day.
One Crew, Door to Door
The movers who wrap your suite are the movers who unload it. No transfer warehouse, no second truck, no stranger handling your things halfway through. For a small load in a busy building that continuity is what keeps everything accounted for.
45+ Years and the Owner on the Truck
The owner has 45+ years in the trade and works the job in person, not just from a phone. Decades of Calgary stairwells is why a crew knows which corner a mattress always catches and pads it before the mattress gets there.
Bonded, Insured, and BBB A+
We are fully bonded and insured on every move and BBB accredited with an A+ rating. The crew is uniformed, which matters in a building where a resident manager is watching who comes through the lobby door.
Apartment Movers Calgary Pricing
Apartment moves are billed by the hour, for the actual hours the crew works, quoted up front before you book. The hourly rate covers the crew, the truck, the dollies and straps, the blankets and shrink wrap, the floor runners, and the complimentary wardrobe cartons, mirror cartons, and mattress bags. The materials that protect your furniture and the building are part of the job.
What drives the hours in an apartment is straightforward. How much you are moving, how many flights of stairs are involved at each end, how far the carry runs from the suite door to the truck, and whether an elevator window or a parking situation slows the load. A ground-floor studio with the truck at the door and a third-floor walk-up with the truck half a block away are very different days, even with the same furniture in them. Tell us the two addresses, the floors, and the date, and we break down the hours before you commit.
A few things worth sorting out before you move out of a Calgary apartment.
9 Apartment Moving Tips Worth Knowing
- Do the move-in and move-out inspections properly. Alberta's Residential Tenancies Act requires an inspection within one week before or after you take or give up possession, and those signed reports are what stand between your deposit and a deduction.
- Photograph the suite empty. Timestamped photos of clean, bare rooms cost you five minutes and settle arguments about damage months later.
- Sort the parking before you sort the boxes. Check whether your block is a Residential Parking Zone and whether the truck needs a contractor permit or a Temporary No Parking permit, which needs its signage up at least 12 hours ahead.
- Measure the stairwell, not just the door. Sofas and box springs die on half-landings, not in doorways. Measure the tightest turn on the carry path at both ends.
- Book the elevator early if there is one. Rental towers run their lifts on a schedule. An unbooked elevator on move day is the most expensive hour of your move.
- Clear and salt the outside stairs in winter. Ice on an exterior staircase slows a crew to a crawl and it is where people get hurt. Do it the night before and again in the morning.
- Get a split mattress bag on a walk-up. A bagged mattress can be turned against a wall and taken down a stairwell without picking up every mark on the way.
- Empty and defrost the fridge if it is yours. A fridge needs a day to drain and dry so it does not leak in the truck or on a shared corridor floor.
- Keep the essentials with you. Documents, medications, chargers, and a couple of days of clothes ride in your car, not on the truck, in case the keys at the new place run late.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you move third-floor walk-ups?
Yes, and we quote the stairs honestly up front. We measure the stairwell and the landings, pad the tight turns, and work a planned carry order so nothing gets muscled past anything else.
How is an apartment move priced?
By the hour, for the actual hours the crew works, quoted up front. The hours depend on how much you are moving, the flights of stairs at each end, the carry distance to the truck, and any elevator or parking delays.
Do you charge extra for stairs?
Stairs add crew time, and time is what you pay for. We tell you at quote time how much the floors are likely to add, so it is on the table before you book instead of at the end.
Can you park the truck on my street?
Often yes, but a lot of inner-city Calgary is inside a Residential Parking Zone where a vehicle without a valid permit gets ticketed. We sort out whether the job needs a contractor permit or a Temporary No Parking permit when we quote.
Will you protect the hallways and the stairwell?
Yes. Rubber-backed floor runners go down on the carry path in your suite, the corridor, and the lobby, and doorframes and railings get padded. Shared-space damage is exactly what a building manager charges back.
Do you provide boxes and materials?
Yes. Complimentary wardrobe cartons, mirror cartons, mattress bags, and shrink wrap come with the move, and we can pack the whole suite or just the breakables.
Can you do a one-bedroom in a single trip?
Usually. Studios and one-bedrooms often load in one truckload, which is the cheapest way for the hours to run. We size the truck to the suite when we quote.
How much can my landlord hold as a deposit?
Under Alberta's Residential Tenancies Act a security deposit cannot be more than one month's rent at the time the tenancy starts. Deductions for damage require properly completed inspection reports.
How far ahead should I book?
Two to four weeks, and more if you are moving at month end when most leases turn over. We also take short-notice apartment moves when a crew is open.
