A Planned Main Street Community
McKenzie Towne was established in 1995 by Carma Developers, now Brookfield Residential. Its original concepts came from the architect Andres Duany, and it follows new urbanist principles.
It has four parts. Inverness, Elgin, Prestwick and High Street, the commercial district anchored by a Sobeys. Elgin has six architectural styles, including English Cottage and Italianate. Prestwick and Inverness have four each, including Queen Anne, Georgian and Craftsman. McKenzie Towne Hall, run by the residents association, has a gym and meeting and banquet rooms, and the community has a fountain and splash park.
Walk-Ups and Row Houses
The City of Calgary's 2021 census profile shows a real mix. 52% of homes are single-detached houses. 22% are apartments in buildings under five storeys, 16% are row houses and 10% are semi-detached. Not one building is taller than five storeys.

Schools are close. McKenzie Towne School teaches kindergarten to grade 4 and McKenzie Highlands School grades 5 to 9 for the public board, and St. Albert the Great teaches kindergarten to grade 9 for the Catholic board.
Where McKenzie Towne Sits
Deerfoot Trail runs along the west side of McKenzie Towne, Stoney Trail along the south and 52 Street SE along the east. The South Trail commercial centre along 130 Avenue SE forms the north edge.
From our office, Google Maps gives 12.2 km and about 10 minutes to High Street by Stoney Trail. Stoney Trail is the community's own south edge, so the truck comes along it and turns north into the streets.
