Calgary to Victoria Movers
Western Provincial Movers is a Calgary to Victoria movers crew that handles the mountain legs, the ferry crossing and the Vancouver Island delivery with one crew and one truck, after 45+ years running the Alberta to BC corridor.

Need a Mover for the Calgary to Victoria Run?
Victoria is the longest single job we quote out of Calgary, because it is two moves stitched together. First the mainland leg, roughly the same run as a Vancouver move, over two mountain passes and the Coquihalla. Then the part most movers gloss over. Your household has to get on a ferry, cross the Strait of Georgia, and come off on Vancouver Island before anyone carries a box into your new place. A truck cannot simply turn up at Tsawwassen and roll on.
We are based in Midnapore in deep south Calgary, at 16 Midlake Blvd SE, tucked between Fish Creek Provincial Park and Macleod Trail. Island work comes from all over the city, and a good share of it out of the south communities around us, Mahogany, Auburn Bay, McKenzie Towne, Cranston, Seton, Shawnessy and Sundance. Victoria sits on the same weekly West Coast schedule as our Vancouver runs, which is what makes a shared-load option realistic on this route.

What a Calgary to Victoria Move Actually Demands
The mainland leg comes first. Highway 1 west out of Calgary through Banff and Lake Louise, over Kicking Horse Pass on the Alberta and BC boundary at 1,627 metres, where the Trans-Canada reaches its highest point of the whole route at 1,643 metres on the Continental Divide. Then the Kicking Horse Canyon east of Golden, then Rogers Pass at 1,382 metres in Glacier National Park, then Revelstoke and Kamloops, then south on the Coquihalla, Highway 5, over Coquihalla Summit at 1,244 metres, past the Great Bear Snow Shed and the Zopkios Brake Check where the grade on Snow Shed Hill runs 8% and the descent to Hope has runaway lanes built into it. From Hope it is Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley and over the Port Mann Bridge, then Highway 99 south and Highway 17 southwest to the Tsawwassen terminal, 39 kilometres south of downtown Vancouver.
Then the water. The Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay sailing takes 1 hour 35 minutes, with roughly 10 to 17 round trips a day depending on the season. Swartz Bay sits 32 kilometres north of downtown Victoria at the top of Highway 17, the Patricia Bay Highway, whose Vancouver Island section runs 33 kilometres down to the city. Ticket sales close 5 minutes before a scheduled sailing for vehicles, so missing a slot by two minutes means waiting for the next one with a full household on board.
Commercial vehicles do not simply queue and hope. Oversize loads, refrigerated units and special arrangements have to be booked directly with BC Ferries, and an oversize load starts at more than 99 feet, or 30.18 metres, of overall length. A vehicle wider than 13 feet, or 3.96 metres, may not be accommodated at all. Knowing those numbers before you commit to a moving truck size is the difference between a delivery that lands on schedule and a truck sitting at a terminal.
Add the weather rules and it is clear why this route wants an operator who runs it. BC requires drivers to obey winter tire and chain signs from October 1 to April 30, and commercial vehicles at 11,794 kg and over must carry steel chains on most major highways. Greater Vancouver and Greater Victoria are exempt from the chain requirement, but every mountain kilometre in between is not. Alberta has no equivalent law at all. We gear the truck in Calgary and we pack for the road we actually drive, with everything wrapped in moving blankets and shrink wrap, stacked and strapped so nothing shifts over two passes, an 8% descent and a ferry deck. The owner has 45+ years on this corridor and rides on the truck. We are BBB accredited with an A+ rating, fully bonded and insured, and the crew is uniformed. Our Calgary long-distance moving service page covers the wider province-to-province picture.
Calgary to Victoria Moving Services We Offer
Dedicated Truck, One Crew, Ferry Included
Book the truck for your household alone and the load goes on in Calgary and comes off in Victoria without anyone else handling it, ferry crossing and all. No transfer warehouse on the mainland, no Island subcontractor meeting a trailer at Swartz Bay, no crew that has never seen your furniture doing the unload. The people who wrapped your bedroom set in Midnapore are the people who carry it into your Victoria home.
Consolidated and Shared-Load Island Moves
A one-bedroom, a condo downsize or a partial household does not need a full truck and its own ferry fare. Share space on a run already heading to the coast and split the cost of the trip. Everything is wrapped, labelled and inventoried so nothing mixes with the other household on board. Ask which day we are already driving west when you call, because matching your dates to a scheduled run is what makes the shared rate work on a route this long.
Downsizing and Retirement Moves to the Island
A lot of Calgary to Victoria moves are a family home becoming something smaller and easier. That is a different job than a straight relocation. It means sorting before packing, measuring what genuinely fits the new place, and moving fewer pieces with more care. We work at the pace the household needs and label by room so the Island place goes together in one pass rather than three weekends of shuffling boxes.
Packing, Crating and Materials for a Long Route
Glassware, mirrors, framed art and electronics have to survive two mountain passes and a marine crossing. We hand-wrap and box the fragile rooms, or the whole home if you would rather not touch a carton. Complimentary wardrobe cartons, mirror cartons, mattress bags and shrink wrap come with the job, clothes stay on the hanger the entire trip, and rubber-backed floor runners go down at both ends so carpet and hardwood stay clean. Our packing services in Calgary page has the full materials list.
Storage in Transit Around the Sailing Schedule
Ferry timetables and possession dates do not negotiate with each other. If your Calgary move-out and your Victoria move-in are weeks apart, we load you on schedule, hold everything wrapped and inventoried, and deliver when the keys are in your hand. One booking covers the load, the hold, the crossing and the delivery. See how the hold works on our storage in transit page.
Why Calgary Customers Choose Us for the Island Run
45+ Years on the Alberta to BC Corridor
We are not learning Rogers Pass or a ferry terminal on your move. The owner has driven this corridor for more than 45 years and is on the truck for it. He knows what avalanche control does to a schedule, how the Coquihalla behaves in February, and how a sailing slot has to be planned around a load and unload rather than the other way around. That experience is why so much of our work comes from referrals and repeat customers.
One Crew Across the Water
The common Island model is a mainland mover, a hand-off, and an Island subcontractor you never spoke to. Every hand-off is a chance for something to be scratched, mixed up or lost, and it is why nobody can tell you where the missing carton went. We do not hand off. One crew, one truck, both doors, ferry included.
Bonded, Insured, and Certified to Cross the Line
Extra-provincial carriers in Canada must hold a safety fitness certificate issued by a provincial authority under the Motor Vehicle Transport Act, tied to a National Safety Code safety rating. That is the legal floor for moving a household from Alberta into BC. We are fully bonded and insured on top of it, BBB accredited with an A+ rating, and the crew is uniformed and trained to protect your furniture, floors and walls at both ends.
We Plan the Sailing, You Do Not Have To
Truck dimensions, commercial booking, terminal cut-off times and the 1 hour 35 minute crossing all get built into the schedule before you sign anything. You are not the one phoning BC Ferries to ask whether a moving truck fits, and you are not the one standing at Tsawwassen finding out that ticket sales closed five minutes ago.
How a Calgary to Victoria Move Is Priced
We bill by the hour, and we quote the whole job up front before anything is loaded. On the Victoria run the number comes from the size of the load, the route and distance, your dates, the access at both ends, and whether you want a dedicated truck or a consolidated spot on a trip we are already making. The ferry crossing is part of the route and it is accounted for in the quote rather than sprung on you afterwards. Stairs, long carries and booked elevator windows add crew time at either end, so we ask about them before we quote.
The hourly rate covers the crew, the truck and the basic equipment, the dollies, straps, moving blankets and floor runners, and the complimentary cartons come with it. Nothing is buried in a lump-sum number that hopes to cover the unknowns. The Canadian moving industry has been unregulated since the mid-1980s, and the Canadian Association of Movers tells consumers to get written documentation before paying anything and to be wary of large upfront payments. Good advice about any mover, us included.

9 Calgary to Victoria Moving Tips Worth Knowing
- Treat the ferry as a scheduled appointment, not a queue. Ticket sales close 5 minutes before a sailing for vehicles. A load that misses a slot waits for the next one, and on a busy day that is hours.
- Ask which day we are already driving west. Matching your dates to a scheduled West Coast run is what unlocks the consolidated rate on a route with a crossing in it.
- Plan a delivery window, not a delivery hour, from November to April. Rogers Pass avalanche control closes the Trans-Canada without notice, and a two-day closure ran four days in March 2026.
- Measure the Victoria entry, stairs and elevator before you pack. Older Island homes and character conversions are not built to Calgary suburban dimensions. Measure both ends first.
- Sort before you pack if you are downsizing. Paying to move furniture that will not fit the new place costs you twice, once on the truck and once getting rid of it.
- Keep the essentials in your own vehicle. Documents, medications, chargers, valuables and a few days of clothes ride with you, because a long route with a crossing in it can move by a day.
- Number and label every carton by room. You may not unpack for a week on a route this long. A counted, labelled load means nothing goes missing between the mainland and the Island.
- Drain fuel from anything with a small engine. Mowers, trimmers and pressure washers cannot ride with fuel or oil in the tank, and a ferry deck is exactly where that matters.
- Book storage at the same time as the move. If your possession dates are weeks apart, arrange the hold up front. It is far cheaper than a hotel plus a second move on the Island.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does a Calgary to Victoria move work with the ferry?
We run the mainland leg on Highway 1 and the Coquihalla, come down Highway 99 and Highway 17 to the Tsawwassen terminal, cross to Swartz Bay in 1 hour 35 minutes, and drive the 32 kilometres down Highway 17 into Victoria. Same truck, same crew, whole way.
Is the ferry included in the quote?
Yes. The crossing is part of the route and it is accounted for in the estimate you get before you book. There is no surprise line item after the fact.
Do moving trucks need a ferry booking?
Commercial vehicles with oversize or special requirements must be booked directly with BC Ferries. An oversize load starts above 99 feet, or 30.18 metres, of overall length, and vehicles wider than 13 feet, or 3.96 metres, may not be accommodated. We handle the booking and size the truck to the sailing.
Is it one crew the whole way, including the Island?
Yes. The movers who load you in Calgary are the movers who unload you in Victoria. There is no mainland hand-off and no Island subcontractor.
How long does the move take?
The mainland drive is roughly the same as a Vancouver run, at least 11 and a half hours behind the wheel, and the crossing adds 1 hour 35 minutes plus terminal time. Commercial drivers are capped at 13 hours of driving and 14 hours on duty in a day, so we plan a real delivery window and call you from the road.
How is a Calgary to Victoria move priced?
By the hour, quoted up front, based on load size, route, dates, access at both ends and whether you book dedicated or consolidated. You get the breakdown in writing before you commit.
Do you move in winter?
Yes, year round. BC winter tire and chain rules run October 1 to April 30 and commercial vehicles at 11,794 kg and up must carry steel chains on most major highways. Greater Victoria and Greater Vancouver are exempt, the mountains in between are not, so we gear up before we leave Calgary.
Can you store my belongings if the Victoria place is not ready?
Yes. We hold your household wrapped and inventoried and deliver once you have keys, with the sailing planned around the new date.
Do you move pianos and heavy items to the Island?
Yes. Uprights, grands, safes and gym equipment travel this route crated, padded and strapped. Our Calgary piano movers handle the instrument at both ends, stairs included.
