A Lake That Started as an Irrigation Reservoir

Chestermere Lake wasn't always a place for summer cabins. It began as a wetland that was turned into an irrigation reservoir. By 1907 a dam and canal system had been built, and the water went to farming. The Western Irrigation District controlled the land after the CPR handed it over in 1944. In 1975 the Chestermere Cabin Owners Association bought it from the district and passed it on to residents.

The town grew around the water from there. Chestermere became a summer village in 1977, a town in 1993 and a city on January 1, 2015.

Lake houses move differently from street houses. One side faces the road, the other faces the water, and the shortest way out isn't always the front door. So when you call, tell us where the doors are on both sides. We'll plan the carry from whichever side is shorter.

Take 17 Avenue, the Old Highway

Here's how we'd get a loaded truck to Chestermere. 17 Avenue SE carried the old Highway 1A and follows the original line of Highway 1 through east Calgary. It's 15.5 km long. About 7.3 km from its west end it has an interchange with Stoney Trail. At 116 Street SE, the Calgary city limit, it turns to farmland, then becomes Chestermere Boulevard for its last 3.8 km to the Trans-Canada interchange.

The Trans-Canada works too. Chestermere is roughly ten minutes east of Calgary's edge on Highway 1, and 17 Avenue ends at that same Highway 1 interchange.

Glenmore Trail is the other way east, but past Stoney Trail it becomes Highway 560, a two-lane road through Rocky View County. With a full truck we'd rather take the interchange and the old highway. From Midnapore that means Stoney Trail north, then east on 17 Avenue.

A Small City Surrounded by County

Chestermere had 22,163 people in the 2021 census on 32.83 square kilometres. Rocky View County surrounds it to the north, east and south, and Calgary is to the west. Calgary's 2007 annexation brought its eastern limit to within one section, about 1.6 km, of Chestermere's western edge.

That gap is mostly farmland. Once the truck passes 116 Street SE on 17 Avenue, you're out of Calgary, and a few minutes later the road becomes Chestermere Boulevard.

The city has 23 neighbourhoods across four quadrants. Eleven of them are in the southwest quadrant, six in the southeast, four in the northwest and two in the northeast.

New Communities Going Up

Chestermere is still adding homes. Clearwater Park, a master-planned community by the Alberta developer Centron, covers more than 580 acres in east Chestermere and is planned for more than 3,000 homes at full build-out. Kinniburgh South is a newer semi-estate community. In South Shore, some lots back right onto the lake, and Waterford has access to the lake for boating, fishing and swimming.

The housing runs from townhomes and condos to bungalows and semi-estate homes. A new-build move needs a possession date in writing and a word from you about whether the street is finished. If the dates don't meet, the furniture can wait in storage.

Chestermere is in Alberta, so there's no licence exchange. Change the address on your licence and vehicle registration at a registry agent within 14 days of the move.
