Vancouver to Calgary Movers
Western Provincial Movers is a team of Vancouver to Calgary movers based in Calgary. We bring Lower Mainland households over the Coquihalla and Rogers Pass with one crew on the truck from your Vancouver door to your Calgary door.

Moving From Vancouver to Calgary?
You are in good company. Statistics Canada reported in March 2026 that Alberta led every province in net interprovincial migration for the 14th quarter in a row. Between July 2022 and July 2023 the Calgary region gained 26,662 people from other provinces while Metro Vancouver lost 4,795, according to Statistics Canada figures reported by the Calgary Journal.
Vancouver to Calgary is about 970 kilometres by road. That is roughly 11 hours of driving in good weather, over three mountain passes, before a single box comes off the truck. We are a Calgary company based at 16 Midlake Blvd SE in Midnapore, so this run ends on our home turf. We know the roads into the south end, the Stoney Trail ring road, and the condo towers and new communities you might be moving into.

The Road From the Coast to Calgary
Most trips leave the Lower Mainland on Highway 1 through the Fraser Valley to Hope. From there we pick one of two ways to Kamloops. The Coquihalla, Highway 5, is about 186 kilometres from Hope to Kamloops. It is the faster road, with Coquihalla Pass at 1,244 metres and a high point of 1,444 metres at Surrey Lake Summit. It is also a road that can take more than 10 centimetres of snow an hour and close outright.
The other way is Highway 1 up the Fraser Canyon through Cache Creek. It runs about 276 kilometres to Kamloops, roughly 90 more than the Coquihalla, and it threads seven tunnels between Yale and Boston Bar. When the Coquihalla is shut or ugly, the canyon is how the load keeps moving.
East of Kamloops, Highway 1 runs past Salmon Arm, where the R.W. Bruhn Bridge is being replaced with a four-lane bridge due in late 2027, and on to Revelstoke. Then comes Rogers Pass in Glacier National Park. Parks Canada counts 135 avalanche paths crossing an 18 kilometre stretch of the highway there, with up to 15 metres of snow a winter. Crews control the slopes with artillery, and the road closes while they do it.
Past Golden, the highway climbs the Kicking Horse Canyon, about 25 kilometres of road rebuilt in phases to four lanes, and tops out at Kicking Horse Pass on the Continental Divide at 1,627 metres. That is the Alberta line. From there it is about 81 kilometres through Banff National Park at 90 km/h, then Canmore and the 110 km/h run into Calgary. No park pass is needed when you drive straight through Banff without stopping. At Stoney Trail, the 101 kilometre ring road finished in December 2023, we swing around the city to your new address. For how we run province-to-province work in general, see our long-distance movers in Calgary page.
Vancouver to Calgary Moving Services We Offer
Dedicated Truck, One Crew, Door to Door
Book the truck for your household alone. The load goes on in Vancouver and comes off in Calgary without anyone else touching it. No transfer warehouse and no trailer swap halfway. The people who wrap your dresser in Burnaby or Surrey are the people who set it down in Calgary. It is also the fastest option, because the schedule is yours.
Shared Loads for Smaller Moves
Moving a condo or a one-bedroom? Share space on a truck already running the corridor and split the cost of the trip. Your items are wrapped, labelled and inventoried so nothing mixes with the other household on board. Ask which dates we are already driving when you call, because lining your move up with a trip is what makes the shared rate work.
Packing for Three Mountain Passes
Glass, mirrors, art and electronics have to survive the Coquihalla, Rogers Pass and Kicking Horse, not just your driveway. We pack the fragile rooms or the whole home. Wardrobe cartons, mirror cartons, mattress bags and shrink wrap come with every move at no charge, and rubber-backed floor runners go down at both ends. Our Calgary packing services page lists everything we bring.
Storage When the Dates Do Not Match
Your Vancouver move-out and your Calgary possession date rarely land on the same day. We load you on time, hold everything wrapped and inventoried, and deliver when you have the keys. See how it works on our storage in transit page.
Pianos and Heavy Items
Uprights, grands, safes and gym equipment all make this trip. They get padded, strapped and built into the load so the mountain grades do not shift them. Our Calgary piano movers handle the instrument at both ends, stairs included.
Why Vancouver Families Choose a Calgary Crew
45+ Years of Owner Experience
The owner has more than 45 years of moving experience and works on the truck, not just the phone. Our owner brings over 45 years of moving experience to every move. You are not paying for a crew to learn Rogers Pass on your furniture.
We Finish on Home Ground
A Vancouver mover often has to find its way around Calgary on delivery day. We live here. We know the south end from Midnapore to Cranston, Auburn Bay and McKenzie Towne, and we know what a Calgary winter does to a driveway. A chinook can lift a winter day from below minus 20 to 10 degrees or warmer, and we plan the unload around whatever the sky is doing.
Bonded, Insured, and BBB A+ Accredited
Every carrier moving a household from one province to another has to hold a safety fitness certificate under the Motor Vehicle Transport Act. That is the floor. We are also fully bonded and insured, BBB accredited with an A+ rating, and the crew shows up in uniform.
We Follow BC's Winter Rules
Out-of-province trucks and cars on BC highways follow BC's rules. Trucks at 11,794 kilograms and over must carry steel chains on most major highways from October 1 to April 30, and RCMP or commercial vehicle enforcement can turn back a truck that is not equipped. We are set up before we leave.
How a Vancouver to Calgary Move Is Priced
We bill by the hour, and we quote the whole job up front before anything is loaded. The number depends on the size of your load, the route, your dates, the access at both ends, and whether you book a dedicated truck or a spot on a shared load. Stairs, long carries and elevator windows all add crew time, so we ask about them before we quote, not after.
You see the crew size, the estimated hours, the truck option and the total laid out plainly. Nothing is buried in a lump sum. If you are weighing us against a Vancouver company, ask each one the same question: who loads, who drives, and who unloads? Then compare the answers, not just the totals. Planning the reverse trip someday? Our Calgary to Vancouver movers page covers that direction.
What to Sort Out When You Land in Alberta
The truck is only half the move. Alberta gives new residents 90 days to exchange an out-of-province driver's licence and 90 days to register a vehicle. You do not need a knowledge or road test to swap a regular Class 5 licence from another province. You hand in your BC licence at a registry agent and bring proof of Alberta residence. Full details are on the Government of Alberta licence exchange page.
For the car, bring proof of ownership, proof of valid insurance in your name, and ID. A private passenger vehicle registered to you in BC can skip the Alberta out-of-province inspection if it is newer than four model years, or if it passed a BC government mechanical inspection in the last 90 days.
Health coverage takes a little longer. Apply to the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan within three months of moving. Coverage starts on the first day of the third month after you settle here, and you keep your BC coverage until then.
And one nice surprise: Alberta has no provincial sales tax. You pay the 5% GST and that is it, against 12% in BC.
9 Vancouver to Calgary Moving Tips Worth Knowing
- Book your Calgary street permit early. If the truck needs to park on the street at your new place, the City wants a Street Use Permit and a Temporary No Parking Permit through ePermits. The base fee is $31.50 a day, and review takes 5 to 15 business days, so apply as soon as you have a move date.
- Watch for snow route parking bans. In winter Calgary calls parking bans on snow routes, usually with a day or two of notice. Blue signs with a white snowflake mark the routes. Check your new address before move day so the truck is not parked where a ban lands.
- Do not plan around a fixed winter arrival hour. Rogers Pass sees up to 15 metres of snow a winter, and avalanche control can shut the Trans-Canada. Plan a soft arrival window instead.
- Set your watch forward on arrival. Calgary runs one hour ahead of Vancouver. Book the crew, the elevator and the key pickup in Calgary time.
- Put winter tires on your own car too. Out-of-province drivers follow BC rules. From October 1 to April 30 you need M+S or mountain snowflake tires on the Coquihalla and through Rogers Pass.
- Leave the Calgary carts where they are. Blue, green and black carts belong to the City and stay with the address. If your new home has none, call 311. For a brand new home, request carts no earlier than 14 days before you move in.
- Open your water account before you get the keys. Calgary water accounts go through ENMAX at 310-2010, or 1-877-571-7111 from outside Alberta. There is a $10 fee on new accounts.
- Mark the 90-day deadlines. Your licence exchange and your vehicle registration are both due within 90 days of becoming an Alberta resident. A BC car newer than four model years can skip the Alberta inspection.
- Buy the new couch after you land. Alberta charges the 5% GST and no provincial sales tax. In BC the same purchase carries 5% GST plus 7% PST.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Vancouver from Calgary by road?
About 970 kilometres on Highway 1 through Kamloops, using the Coquihalla as the shortcut between Hope and Kamloops. Taking the Fraser Canyon instead adds roughly 90 kilometres to that middle leg.
How long does a Vancouver to Calgary move take?
The drive alone is about 11 hours in good weather, before any loading, unloading or rest stops. A dedicated truck runs on your dates. A shared load is timed to a trip we are already making. We give you the timeline when we quote, and winter closures can push it out.
Which route do you take from Vancouver to Calgary?
Usually Highway 1 to Hope, the Coquihalla to Kamloops, then Highway 1 east over Rogers Pass and Kicking Horse Pass into Banff and Calgary. When the Coquihalla is closed or nasty, we can run the Fraser Canyon to Kamloops instead. We check DriveBC before we roll.
How is a Vancouver to Calgary move priced?
By the hour, and we quote the whole job up front. The number comes from the size of the load, the route, your dates, the access at both ends, and whether you book a dedicated truck or a spot on a shared load.
Is it one crew the whole way?
Yes. The crew that loads you in Vancouver is the crew that carries everything into your Calgary home. No transfer warehouse and no hand-off to another truck.
Do you move from Vancouver to Calgary in winter?
Yes, all year. BC requires winter tires or chains on the Coquihalla and on Highway 1 through Rogers Pass from October 1 to April 30, and we are geared for it. Avalanche control at Rogers Pass can close the highway, so we never promise a winter arrival hour.
Can you store my things if the Calgary place is not ready?
Yes. We load you on your Vancouver date, hold everything wrapped and inventoried, and deliver when you have the keys. One booking covers the load, the hold and the delivery.
What do I have to do after moving from BC to Alberta?
Exchange your BC licence and register your vehicle in Alberta within 90 days. No road test is needed for a regular licence. Apply for Alberta Health Care within 3 months, and keep your BC coverage until the Alberta coverage starts.
Is Calgary in a different time zone from Vancouver?
Yes. Calgary is one hour ahead of Vancouver. If your crew is booked for 8 a.m. in Calgary, that is 7 a.m. back on the coast.
